ImmiMaps - Webmaps on Immigration

This page will soon contain a collection of webmaps on immigration.

How to code this?

Fact 1

Germany is often considered the country that is accepting the largest share of migrants in Europe.
But is this really true? Let's look at the absolute and relative figures of asylum applicants (where 'relative' means 'in relation to total population').

This map is based on Eurostat data from 2008-2015.1 Simply use the buttons below the map to select a year.

Fact 2

Die ZEIT, one of Germany's most important newspapers, has recently published an impressive article on anti-immigrant violence in Germany (ger, eng). The authors found out that there have been 222 attacks on refugee hostels between Januar and November 2015. As of November 30, charges had been filed in only 8 cases.

Using their data set, I replicate the most important results here.2

1. Mapping was done using the open-source JavaScript library Leaflet. Check out this example for how to build a simple Leaflet choropleth map. I also had help from the NYC-based webmapper Chris Whong.
2. The pie charts were created in d3pie, which is built on the open-source JavaScript library D3.js.
